Living in Russia as an International Student
Russia is home to a significant Arab and Muslim community. Major cities like Moscow, Kazan, and Saint Petersburg have established mosques, halal food options, and welcoming Islamic communities. Most universities provide affordable dormitory accommodation for international students on or near campus.
Language
The official language is Russian. Most degree programs at partner universities are conducted in Russian, which is why a preparatory year focused on Russian language acquisition is recommended for students who are not yet proficient. After the preparatory year, students develop strong enough language skills to attend regular academic programs.
Currency & Cost of Living
Russia uses the Russian Ruble (RUB). The cost of living varies by city — Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the most expensive, while cities like Kazan, Orenburg, and Nalchik offer very affordable living costs, typically between $200–$400 USD per month for a student in a dormitory.
Safety & Student Support
Russian universities take the safety and wellbeing of international students very seriously. All partner universities have dedicated international student offices that assist with registration, visa renewal, dormitory matters, and any personal concerns. Horizons maintains an on-ground team in Russia to provide additional support to our students year-round.
